Schott Introduces Products at AIA Show
Specialty glass manufacturer Schott introduced several new products at the AIA show in Boston last month.
ColorTherm laminated insulating glass units, designed for building exteriors and interiors, are available in translucent white and four standard transparent designer colors—light blue, cobalt blue, light green and light yellow. They are available with a high-performance low-E coating to reduce heating and cooling loads. Individual panels are 1-inch thick and available in a variety of standard sizes up to 91 x 56 inches, except for cobalt blue, which is available in dimensions up to 80 x 56 inches.
“Architects have been demanding that we develop an insulating glass line that combines the beauty of Schott colored glass with the thermal performance required for modern designs,” says Donald Press, general manager of Schott’s architectural glass business in North America. “Having a standard product, instead of a custom-design, provides architects with the complete performance specifications in advance for the five color types.”
The company also introduced Mirona, a glass that transforms TV and computer screens into mirrors.
Mirona transformation glass is designed to function as both a decorative element and a display. Coated on both sides with an optical interference layer, it turns glass displays, such as computer screens and TVs, into mirrors when not in use. But when the display is turned on, the image is displayed flawlessly on the surface.
“Wall-mounted flat screen TVs—now ubiquitous throughout the world—have become the ‘black holes’ of interior decor, especially when they’re not in use,” says Press,. “With Mirona panels, however, a TV in its off-state is transformed into a mirror, a much more attractive decorative element.”
Mirona transformation glass is available as normal window glass, borosilicate heat-resistant glass and gray glass, and it can be processed into laminated safety glass. It can be supplied tempered and as low-iron glass, as needed. Applications include retail displays, architectural partitions and cover panels for television sets and computer screens.
It is a mineral glass coated on both sides with an optical interference layer to enable both reflection and transmission in thicknesses ranging from 2.0 to 12.0 mm or 1/16 to ½ inch. It is available in sizes ranging from 1,770 mm x 1,220 mm (69 11/16 x 48 inches), 3,180 x 1,770 mm (125 3/16 x 69 11/16 inches), and 3,770 x 1,770 mm (148 7/16 x 69 11/16 inches).
