College Anchors Major Redevelopment Project

The new home of Boricua College in The Bronx, a 120,000-sqaure-foot tower designed by Hugo S. Subotovsky, will be the centerpiece of Boricua Village, a 4.5-acre community revitalization project that is a cornerstone of New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg’s South Bronx initiative. The mixed-use village also will add 50,000 square feet of retail space and 689 residential units to a depressed area in the vicinity of Yankee Stadium.

The design for the 14-story college building calls for a blue-tinted glass exterior. The building envelope is almost entirely curtainwall from the fourth floor up and includes a rounded corner. Fenestration system manufacturer YKK AP had to modify products to facilitate installation due to structural obstacles built into the building design.

The supplier designed a split vertical mullion, screw-spline system specifically for this job which allows frames to be pre-assembled and installed from the interior. According to YKK AP New York sales representative Mark Knapp, “The product we designed makes installation easier, and therefore more affordable, and brings the architect’s vision into full realization. Boricua will have a beautiful school at a price they can afford.”

Boricua College is an accredited liberal arts school founded to meet the needs of Puerto Rican and other Hispanic students. The school employs a bilingual faculty and staff. The new building will allow Boricua to increase enrollment from 1,200 to 3,000 students.
