AAMA Releases Two Documents Addressing Testing of Fenestration Products

AAMA 502-08, a voluntary specification for field testing, and AAMA 511-08, a voluntary guideline for forensic water penetration testing, have been released by the American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA).

The new 10- and 11-page documents are titled Voluntary Specification for Field Testing of Newly Installed Fenestration Products and Voluntary Guideline for Forensic Water Penetration Testing of Fenestration Products, respectively.

The AAMA 502-08 specification can be used to evaluate the performance of newly installed fenestration products for air leakage resistance and water penetration resistance under controllable, reproducible and appropriate conditions. "The newly created document establishes the requirements for field test specimens, apparatus, sampling, test procedures and test reports," says Ken Brenden, AAMA technical standards manager.

Building on the seven steps of forensic investigations identified in ASTM E 2128, Standard Guide for Evaluating Water Leakage of Building Walls, the guidelines detailed in AAMA 511-08 provide additional information on the four steps prior to testing and three steps during and after testing. Brenden says, "AAMA 511-08 will assist industry professionals by providing a guideline in selecting the appropriate adaptations to the existing testing standards for application to field investigations of fenestration products."

Both AAMA 502-08, Voluntary Specification for Field Testing of Newly Installed Fenestration Products and AAMA 511-08, Voluntary Guideline for Forensic Water Penetration Testing of Fenestration Products are available at a cost of $30 for download, $60 for paper copy and $65 for CD.
